RG40XX H Retro Handheld Game Console Review: 5488 Games & 5G WiFi – Is it Worth It?
The RG40XX H handheld game console promises a nostalgic trip back to the golden age of gaming, packed with modern conveniences. With a claimed 5488 games pre-loaded onto its 64GB TF card, 5G WiFi, and a vibrant 4.0-inch IPS screen, it’s certainly an enticing package. But does this retro-modern hybrid deliver on its promises? I’ve spent considerable time testing the RG40XX H to find out.
The RG40XX H boasts an impressive array of features. Beyond the sheer number of pre-loaded games, which span various classic consoles, the inclusion of a Linux operating system opens up a world of possibilities. Adding emulators and additional ROMs is relatively straightforward for those comfortable with the process. The 5G WiFi is surprisingly fast and reliable, even in areas with less-than-ideal signal strength. Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity paired seamlessly with my headphones and external controller. The HDMI output is a nice touch, allowing for big-screen gaming sessions. The build quality feels surprisingly solid, with a tempered glass screen providing good protection against scratches.

The RG40XX H’s performance is generally solid. The quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, while not cutting edge, handled the vast majority of the pre-loaded games with ease. There were occasional minor instances of slowdown in more demanding titles, but nothing that significantly impacted the overall gaming experience. The 4.0-inch IPS screen is a highlight, providing vibrant colors and crisp visuals. The battery life, while not quite reaching the advertised 6 hours under heavy use, still managed a respectable 4-5 hours, which is ample for most gaming sessions. The response time of the buttons and D-pad is excellent and adds to the responsive feel. Fast charging via USB-C was also appreciated.
The Linux OS allows for significant customization and expansion, albeit requiring a certain level of technical knowledge to manage effectively. The built in 5G WIFI is incredibly useful for downloading additional games and emulators.
Pros:
- Vast library of pre-loaded games (5488)
- Excellent 4.0-inch IPS display
- Fast and reliable 5G WiFi
- Versatile Linux operating system
- Solid build quality
- HDMI output for big-screen gaming
Cons:
- Occasional minor slowdown in demanding games
- Battery life slightly below advertised
- Requires some technical knowledge to fully utilize the Linux OS
The RG40XX H is a surprisingly capable handheld game console. While it has minor shortcomings, its strengths—the vast game library, vibrant display, and powerful WiFi—easily outweigh them. For retro gaming enthusiasts looking for a versatile and affordable option with modern connectivity, the RG40XX H is a strong recommendation. Its potential is further enhanced by the flexibility offered by the Linux operating system, making it a device that can grow and adapt to the user’s preferences over time.
