The JBL Clip 5 (model number JBLCLIP5BLK) is the latest iteration in JBL’s popular line of ultra-portable Bluetooth speakers. I’ve been using this little powerhouse for the past few weeks, subjecting it to everything from poolside lounging to hiking trails, and I’m ready to share my comprehensive review.

The Clip 5 boasts a redesigned carabiner clip, making it even easier to attach to backpacks, bags, or even your belt loop. JBL promises improved sound quality compared to its predecessors, and the dustproof and waterproof (IP67 rating) build is a significant selling point for outdoor use. The battery life is advertised at 12 hours, a considerable improvement over previous models, although my testing revealed slightly lower battery life in certain conditions. The Auracast™ technology also offers the exciting ability to multi-connect via the JBL app.

The sound quality is surprisingly impressive for such a compact device. The bass response is decent for its size, though it doesn’t quite match larger speakers. At higher volumes, some distortion was noticeable, but overall, the clarity and volume were sufficient for most casual listening situations. The battery life lived up to JBL’s claim during moderate use (around 10 hours), but pushing it to maximum volume consistently reduced the time. I found the Bluetooth pairing to be reliable and seamless across multiple devices. The waterproof and dustproof design proved very useful during my testing; I completely submerged the speaker while listening to music and had no problems in use. It is a fantastic little speaker for backpacking too.
