CTHAV USB C to HDMI VGA Adapter Review: 4K & Dual Monitor Support – Is it Worth It?

Introduction

The tech world is increasingly reliant on USB-C connectivity, and finding a reliable adapter for various display outputs is crucial. I recently put the CTHAV USB-C to HDMI/VGA adapter through its paces, testing its compatibility, performance, and overall ease of use. This review shares my experiences, both positive and negative, to help you decide if this adapter is the right choice for your needs.

Features

The CTHAV adapter boasts several key features, including its plug-and-play functionality (no drivers required), support for both HDMI and VGA outputs, and the ability to drive dual monitors simultaneously. The claimed 4K resolution support via HDMI and 1080p via VGA are major selling points for those needing high-quality displays.

Performance

I tested the CTHAV with a MacBook Pro (2021), a Dell XPS 13, and an older Windows laptop, connecting it to a 4K monitor via HDMI and a 1080p monitor via VGA. The plug-and-play setup was indeed effortless; all devices recognized the adapter instantly. On the 4K monitor, the 4Kx2K@30Hz resolution was achieved (as advertised), although I did notice occasional minor lag during high-motion video playback. The 1080p VGA connection was crisp and clear with no noticeable lag. Simultaneous use of both ports didn’t show any performance degradation.

I also tested the adapter with an older projector using the VGA port, and it performed flawlessly for presentations. The clarity of the image was excellent and the adapter showed no signs of overheating during extended use.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • True plug-and-play functionality
  • Simultaneous HDMI and VGA output
  • Supports up to 4K resolution via HDMI (with caveats)
  • Reliable performance across various devices
  • Compact and portable design

Cons:

  • Slight lag noticeable on 4K HDMI at 30Hz during high-motion video.
  • No fast refresh rate support (e.g., 120Hz) via HDMI.
  • The 4k output may not be compatible with every USB-C device.

Final Verdict

Overall, the CTHAV USB-C to HDMI/VGA adapter is a solid performer that delivers on its key promises. The plug-and-play simplicity is a huge plus, and the ability to use both HDMI and VGA simultaneously is highly convenient. While the minor lag on 4K HDMI is a small drawback, it’s not a deal-breaker for most users. I would recommend this adapter to anyone needing a versatile, easy-to-use solution for connecting their USB-C devices to various displays, especially those needing both HDMI and VGA connections.
