EOS R100 (Model Number: EOS R100) Camera Review

The Canon EOS R100, bundled with the RF-S 18-45mm IS STM lens, promises a compelling entry into the mirrorless world. After weeks of extensive testing, capturing everything from vibrant landscapes to fast-moving subjects, I’m ready to share my comprehensive review. This camera boasts a 24.1MP APS-C sensor, a touted strong autofocus system, and video capabilities that are surprisingly capable for its price point. Let’s dive in.

The EOS R100 packs a punch for its size and price. The 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor provides excellent image quality, especially considering its low-light performance. I was particularly impressed with the detail captured even in challenging lighting conditions. The inclusion of the RF-S 18-45mm IS STM lens offers a versatile focal range, perfect for everyday shooting. The autofocus system, featuring Face+Tracking and Eye Detection AF, consistently locked onto subjects with impressive accuracy, both in stills and video. The continuous shooting modes, offering up to 6.5 fps with One-Shot AF and up to 3.5 fps with Servo AF, provided ample opportunity to capture fleeting moments.

The Digital Video Stabilizer proved remarkably effective in minimizing shake during handheld video recording, resulting in smoother footage than I expected. The 1080p video recording is sufficient for most casual users and social media content. While 4K is absent, it’s understandable given the camera’s positioning in the market.

In real-world usage, the EOS R100 exceeded expectations. The autofocus was incredibly snappy and reliable, rarely missing the mark. The image quality was sharp and vibrant, with accurate color reproduction. I found the camera’s responsiveness to be excellent, with minimal lag between pressing the shutter and capturing the image. The ease of use is another major plus, making it an ideal camera for both beginners and experienced photographers looking for a simple yet capable secondary camera.

Battery life was decent, lasting a full day of casual shooting on a single charge. I did however notice some slight overheating during extended video recording sessions, something to keep in mind if you intend to use this heavily for videography. The menu system is intuitive and easy to navigate. Though some advanced features might require a bit of exploration, overall the user experience is very positive.

Pros:

  • Excellent image quality for the price
  • Fast and accurate autofocus system
  • Effective Digital Video Stabilizer
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Versatile kit lens

Cons:

  • No 4K video recording
  • Slight overheating during extended video use
  • Battery life could be improved

The Canon EOS R100 offers a compelling combination of image quality, ease of use, and features at an attractive price point. While it lacks some of the advanced capabilities of higher-end models, it excels in its intended role as an accessible and versatile everyday camera. The autofocus system is a particular highlight. If you’re looking for a reliable, easy-to-use mirrorless camera with excellent image quality and a great lens kit, the EOS R100 is a strong contender. I highly recommend it.
