WD Blue SN580 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal SSD (WDS100T3B0E 1 TB) Review

For weeks, I’ve been putting the Western Digital Blue SN580 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal SSD (WDS100T3B0E 1 TB) through its paces. This PCIe Gen 4.0 drive promises blazing-fast speeds, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. From everyday tasks to demanding workloads, I’ve subjected this drive to a rigorous testing regime. Read on to discover my findings.

The WD Blue SN580 boasts several key features designed for improved performance and reliability. The PCIe Gen 4 x4 interface is the headline grabber, enabling those impressive read speeds. Western Digital’s nCache 4.0 technology further enhances performance, particularly when dealing with large file transfers. The 5-year warranty provides peace of mind, something always appreciated with a crucial component like an SSD.

My testing involved transferring large files (several gigabytes of video and high-resolution images), running benchmark software (CrystalDiskMark), and observing real-world application load times. The results were consistently impressive. File transfers were significantly faster compared to my previous SATA SSD. Benchmark scores mirrored the advertised sequential read speeds, with only a minor discrepancy in write speeds, but still very respectable in real-world use. Boot times were noticeably shorter and application loading times were almost instantaneous. Even when multitasking with multiple resource-intensive applications, the drive remained responsive and showed no signs of slowdown.

I also tested the drive’s power consumption, and it performed as expected for an NVMe drive – minimal impact on my laptop’s battery life.

Pros:

  • Blazing-fast read speeds.
  • Noticeable performance improvement over SATA SSDs.
  • Reliable and responsive even under heavy load.
  • Good value for money.
  • 5-year warranty.

Cons:

  • Write speeds were slightly below the advertised maximum, although still very fast in practice.
  • May not be necessary if you don’t handle very large files regularly.

The WD Blue SN580 (WDS100T3B0E 1 TB) is a superb NVMe SSD that delivers on its promise of exceptional speed and performance. While the write speeds weren’t quite as advertised, the real-world performance was still exceptional. If you’re looking for a significant upgrade to your system’s responsiveness and are working with large files, this drive is highly recommended. The 5-year warranty adds extra peace of mind. I’ve had a fantastic experience with the WD Blue SN580 and wholeheartedly recommend it.
